An old Gypsy woman foretold three men for Yelena: one from God, the second from the people, and the third—God forbid—from the unclean one. For love and the joy of motherhood, she will have to pay such a terrible price that it is frightening even to name it. And all because of “that one”—the hateful larva that, on a whim of its own or by the will of higher powers, chose poor Yelena as its host. The dark entity lies dormant, waiting for the right moment to drink its fill of the masculine strength of the unwary men who fall in love with Yelena.
Because of the larva, the neighbors shun the girl, though they do not understand what they are really dealing with. It is also the reason Granny Parasка dislikes the orphan. The girl believes that all her misfortunes are caused by the lustful she-demon. Stefa, the village bosorka, thinks otherwise: now is not the time to fight what is part of you, because terrible times are approaching. The witch is not mistaken: in Mariyampil, jackbooted men are already trampling the earth—men whose deeds will make even hell tremble.
What will “that one” become to Yelena: another enemy or a loyal ally? Can a young, pure soul and an ancient demonic being coexist in one body? And who, in the end, will prevail?
The book depicts the village of Mariyampil (now in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast) during the arrival of the second Soviets, when the UPA unit led by Saper fought the invaders to the last warrior. If certain events in the story frighten you, know this: those in particular are not the author’s invention.
