“The Invincible” is a science-fiction novel by Stanisław Lem.
The second-class cruiser “The Invincible” landed on the desert and uninhabited planet Regis-III. Shortly before this, another Earth ship—the “Condor”—disappeared on this planet, having sent only two messages beforehand. The first reported a successful landing on the surface of Regis-III, and the second mentioned some “flies.”
The crew of “The Invincible” was tasked with finding traces of the missing “Condor” expedition and determining the cause of its disappearance. The biologist Lauda hypothesized that evolution was occurring among the mechanisms left behind by an alien civilization that came from somewhere in the Lyra constellation (the Lyrans).
Judging by the few traces preserved from the first robot colonies, there were several types. The “mobile” ones—complex, intelligent, armed robots powered by nuclear energy. The “simplest” ones—capable of limited adaptation but not dependent on spare parts or radioactive fuel.
Left without the oversight of the Lyrans, the robots began to develop and change uncontrollably. Their evolution led to the survival of the fittest. And these turned out to be the simplest robots. The Earth expeditions encountered their distant descendants, which appeared as “flies”...
